When asked by CNN if the 2026 World Cup would be his final outing, Ronaldo confirmed, “Definitely, yes. I will be 41 years old, and I think [this] will be the moment in the big competition.”

This statement brings clarity to his recent comments about his retirement being on the horizon. Ronaldo elaborated on his feelings, acknowledging his monumental career while discussing its end as well. “I’m enjoying the moment, but when I mean soon, it’s really soon because I gave everything for football,” said the all-time leading goalscorer in international soccer history. He provided a more specific window, stating, “Let’s be honest, when I mean soon, it’s probably one or two years I’ll still be at the game.”
Ronaldo went on to reflect on his incredible 25-year journey in the sport, a career filled with shattered records and unparalleled achievements. “I’m in the game for the last 25 years. I did everything. I have many records in the different scenarios in the clubs and also in the national teams. I’m really proud, so let’s enjoy the moment, live the moment,” he shared. The soccer icon holds 143 international goals and the distinction of being the first male player to score at five different World Cups.
For now, Ronaldo’s immediate focus with the national team is on securing Portugal’s place at the 2026 tournament. The upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will be his sixth.
