Penn State plans to appeal Academic Progress Rate; more on Landon Tengwall’s medical retirement, and more
Today’s Penn State football news headlines feature the next step after reports of the Lions’ sliding Academic Progress Rate, plus James Franklin and players react to the news of offensive lineman Landon Tengwall’s medical retirement.
Penn State was found to have the lowest APR in the Big Ten in a report by Spotlight PA, which prompted Franklin to answer questions and vow to improve it. But according to Mark Wogenrich from All Penn State, university trustee Brandon Short said the school plans to appeal the number to the NCAA. In a statement, Short said the timing of the report so close to the start of the season was designed to “undermine” the football program.
Tengwall announced Wednesday evening that he was forced to cut his football career short because of injury. The former highly touted recruit was ticketed to start at left guard for the Lions after beginning the 2022 season in the same role, but was unable to spend much time on the practice field this summer. Franklin said Tengwall would still be a presence in the program while teammates sang his praises, writes Daniel Gallen for Lions247.
