Market on Monday | Sensex, Nifty end flat after smart recovery; IT, media stocks rally
Benchmark indices recovered smartly from early losses to close marginally higher on Monday, with gains in information technology stocks helping offset weakness in select FMCG, Metal and Realty counters.
At close, the Sensex was up 47.01 points or 0.06 percent at 77,616.40, and the Nifty was up 4.10 points or 0.02 percent at 24,211.
The broader markets, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100, ended on flat note.
Among the top gainers on the Nifty, TCS led the rally with a gain of 5.4%, followed by HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Bajaj Auto. On the losing side, Grasim Industries emerged as the biggest laggard, declining 2%, followed by Tata Steel, Nestle India, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) and Eternal.
Sector-wise, Nifty IT emerged as the top performer, rallying 3.6%, followed by Nifty Media, which gained 2%, and Nifty Consumer Durables, up 1%. Nifty Auto rose 0.45%, while Nifty Private Bank advanced 0.30%.
On the downside, Nifty FMCG was the worst-performing sector, falling 1%, followed by Nifty Metal, down 0.7%, Nifty Infra, which declined 0.5%.
