Dow Staying Strong as Tech Sends S&P 500, Nasdaq Lower
Tech apprehension is weighing more than reduced oil prices and falling bond yields
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI) is leading the charge today, up 80 points at last check. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) and Nasdaq have pivoted into the red though, brushing off cooling oil prices and reduced Middle East tensions. Despite bond yields pulling back, there’s some tech sector apprehension ahead of a massive week of large cap earnings. Meanwhile, Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), is heading for its highest close in over a month.

Colgate-Palmolive Co (NYSE:CL) is seeing a surge in options activity today. At last look, over 7,500 options have changed hands, volume that’s five times the average intraday amount. There’s spread activity at the weekly 9/4 90-strike, with new positions bought to open there. Colgate stock is 1.2% higher to trade at $91.91 today, and boasts a 17% year-to-date lead.
Tyson Foods Inc (NYSE:TSN) stock is near the top of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) today, up 6.4% to trade at $61.11. There’s no clear catalyst, but TSN is trading at its highest levels since a late-May bear gap. The shares have regained their year-to-date breakeven level today as well. Tyson Foods reports earnings on Monday, August 3.
Intel Corp (NASDAQ:INTC) stock is near the bottom of the Nasdaq, leading the chip sector lower. Last seen trading down 5% at $87.92, the shares have breached their 100-day moving average and are headed for their lowest close since late April. Despite a 38% drawdown from June 30 record high-levels at $142.35, Intel stock is up 138% in 2026 still.
