When are Social Security and SSI benefits paid out in August 2026? Complete payment schedule
With August 2026 underway, the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) is now in the midst of issuing this month’s benefits for the following programs:
Who has the Social Security Admin already paid for August 2026?
Per the SSA’s official payment timeline, the agency has sent out August’s benefits to three groups:
- July 31: SSI recipients
On Friday, July 31, the SSA distributed August’s SSI a day ahead of the benefit’s typical schedule. SSI is normally sent out on the first day of each month, but payment was brought forward because August 1 was a non-business day.
A program for low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability, SSI is separate to the Social Security scheme, despite also being run by the SSA. While Social Security requires claimants to accumulate work credits to qualify for benefits, eligibility for SSI does not depend on an applicant’s employment record.
- August 3: Double beneficiaries and some long-term Social Security recipients
On Monday, August 3, the SSA was scheduled to pay out this month’s Social Security to beneficiaries who started getting their payments before May 1997. August 3 was also the Social Security distribution date for recipients who concurrently claim SSI.

When does August’s three-Wednesdays cycle kick in?
Of the 71.3 million recipients of Social Security benefits nationwide, many are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month, depending on their birthday. In August 2026, this payment cycle is as follows:
- Beneficiaries born on 1st to 10th of any month: paid on Wednesday, August 12
- Beneficiaries born on 11th to 20th of any month: paid on Wednesday, August 19
- Beneficiaries born on 21st to 31st of any month: paid on Wednesday, August 26
NB: If you receive Social Security benefits based on someone else’s employment history, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.
How much are monthly Social Security and SSI benefits?
- Social Security retirement benefits: $2,029.92
- Social Security disability benefits: $1,496.16
- Social Security survivor benefits: $1,631.39
- SSI benefits: $738.10
(Average benefit, according to figures published by the SSA.)
How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?
- Money can be paid into a beneficiary’s bank account by direct deposit
