My Top 3 Balance Transfer Cards for August 2026: Pay No Interest for up to 21 Months
The average American credit card debt is $6,715, according to Motley Fool Money research. If you ask me, that’s about $6,715 higher than it should be.
One of the best ways to get out of debt: a balance transfer credit card, which lets you move an existing balance and pay it off at 0% interest for a limited time. And right now, the best options give you up to 21 months of breathing room — for no annual fee.
Here are my three favorite balance transfers cards available now.
1. Wells Fargo Reflect® Card: My favorite intro APR card
The Wells Fargo Reflect® Card (rates and fees) gives you 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers (at the end of the intro period, a 17.49%, 23.99%, or 28.24% Variable APR applies), the longest runway on this list.
That’s almost two years to pay down debt without a cent going to interest, as long as you make your transfer within 120 days of opening the account.
The long runway is exactly why the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card earned our award for Best 0% Intro APR Credit Card for 2026.
There’s a catch, though: The balance transfer fee is 5%, min: $5, on the higher end for balance transfer cards. On a $6,000 transfer, that’s $300 added to your balance upfront. It also earns no rewards, and the only notable perk is $600 a year in cellphone protection.
Still, the balance transfer fee easily beats the interest you’d rack up on a card charging 20% APR or more. Just keep in mind that once the intro period ends, the rate will revert to a regular ongoing variable APR.
If a long payoff window matters more to you than a low transfer fee, the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card is the card to get.
2. BankAmericard® credit card: An identical interest-free window
The BankAmericard® credit card matches the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card’s savings window, with 0% Intro APR for 21 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made in the first 60 days. After the Intro APR offer ends, a Variable APR that’s currently 14.99% – 25.99% will apply. A 5% fee applies to all balance transfers. Balance transfers may not be used to pay any account provided by Bank of America.
The ongoing variable APR is noticeably lower than the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card’s range, which matters if you don’t fully clear your balance in time. The balance transfer fee is the same 5% of the amount of each transaction, but with this card, there’s no penalty APR, so a late payment won’t spike your rate.
This card is a fit if you want the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card’s long runway, plus a lower variable APR and some protection in case you miss a payment here or there.
3. Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card: Save on debt and earn rewards
The Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card offers a shorter window than both the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card and the BankAmericard. You’ll get 0% Intro APR for 15 billing cycles for purchases, and for any balance transfers made in the first 60 days. After the Intro APR offer ends, a Variable APR that’s currently 17.49% – 27.49% will apply. A 3% Intro balance transfer fee will apply for the first 60 days your account is open. After the Intro balance transfer fee offer ends, the fee for future balance transfers is 5%. Balance transfers may not be used to pay any account provided by Bank of America.
That’s six months shorter than the other two cards on this list. Here’s the difference, though: You’ll also earn great rewards along the way.
With the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards, you’ll earn 6% cash back for the first year in the category of your choice, then 3% after that. Options include gas and EV charging, online shopping, dining, travel, drug stores, and home improvement and furnishings.
You’ll also earn 2% cash back at grocery stores and wholesale clubs for the first $2,500 in combined choice category/grocery store/wholesale club quarterly purchases, plus 1% back on everything else. Your 6% and 2% rewards only apply to the first $2,500 in combined purchases each quarter, then you’ll earn 1%.
Those are some of the best earning rates you’ll find on any credit card, let alone one with such a strong 0% window. Getting 6% back in a chosen category is pretty much unheard of, even if it comes with some limitations.
Another plus: Your balance transfer fee starts at 3% for 60 days from account opening, then 5%. That’s lower than the two cards above, and can mean hundreds of dollars in savings on a big balance.
It also comes with the opportunity to earn a welcome bonus — something neither of the other cards here offers.
Current welcome bonus: Earn a $200 online cash rewards bonus after you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.
