Among mid-cap mutual funds that meet the screen used for this ranking, HSBC Midcap Fund is at the top on six-month returns. The fund delivered 17.1 percent, ahead of WOC Mid Cap Fund at 14.3 percent and Quant Mid Cap Fund at 12.8 percent, according to ACE MF data on August 14.
The ranking considers only schemes with assets under management of at least Rs 1,500 crore. Among the top five funds that meet this criterion, Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund has the largest corpus at Rs 40,036.1 crore.
The benchmark comparison is also important. HSBC Midcap Fund was ahead of its benchmark by 21.7 percentage points on a one-year basis, with the benchmark returning 0.0%. It was also ahead of its benchmark by 15.8 percentage points on a three-year basis, with the benchmark returning 9.1%.
The order changes on a one-month basis. Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund delivered the strongest return among these five schemes at 5.3 percent.
A different fund moves to the top when the three-month window is used. Motilal Oswal Midcap Fund leads this comparison with 14.5 percent.
The same scheme also stays ahead on the three-year return chart. HSBC Midcap Fund delivered 24.9 percent over this period.
Looking at more than one return period gives investors a fuller picture. The top performer in a recent window may differ from the fund that has delivered stronger longer-term returns.

What is a mid-cap fund?
Mid-cap funds must invest at least 65 percent of their assets in mid-cap companies. Under SEBI’s market-cap classification, companies ranked 101st to 250th by full market capitalisation are treated as mid-cap stocks.
