Social Security’s Ticket to Work program offers free career support and financial safeguards for disability beneficiaries
INDIANA — Social Security disability recipients looking to enter or re-enter the workforce have access to specialized assistance through the federal Ticket to Work Program, an initiative designed to help beneficiaries achieve financial independence without immediately losing their essential benefits.
The free and voluntary program serves adults ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). By connecting participants with authorized service providers, the program creates a personalized “employment team” to assist with career counseling, vocational training, resume building, and job placement.
Key Safeguards for Job Seekers
A major hurdle for many disability recipients considering employment is the fear of losing income and healthcare coverage. The Ticket to Work Program integrates several built-in safety nets, known as Work Incentives, to ease this transition:
- Trial Work Period (TWP): Allows participants to test their ability to work for at least nine months while retaining full SSDI payments regardless of earnings.
- Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE): Provides a 36-month window following the trial period where benefits can quickly restart if earnings fall below a specific threshold.
- Continued Healthcare: Beneficiaries can often keep Medicare or Medicaid coverage for several years, even after cash payments cease.
- Paused Medical Reviews: Continuing Disability Reviews (CDRs) are suspended while participants make timely progress within the program.
Program Guidelines and Responsibilities
While authorized service providers guide participants through job acquisition and ongoing support, Social Security emphasizes that beneficiaries must actively manage their records. Program participants are required to maintain earnings records, report income changes directly to Social Security, and remain in regular contact with their designated provider.
