What happens to your Social Security benefits in the United States if you move to a different state?
Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out millions of payments to retirees, survivors, disability beneficiaries, and people who qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Those payments reach all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories like Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. And if you’re living abroad, Social Security can often follow you there too.
But while your benefits can travel with you, moving to a different state inside the U.S. can affect how much money actually lands in your bank account.

Why changing states can reduce your Social Security payments
Most states don’t tax Social Security benefits. But eight still do—either partially or fully:
- Colorado
- Connecticut
- Minnesota
- Montana
- New Mexico
- Rhode Island
- Utah
- Vermont
Tax rates and exemptions vary widely, meaning your take‑home amount could change depending on your income and where you move. If you’re considering relocating to one of these states, it’s worth running the numbers first.
Keep your SSA information updated when you move
The SSA also requires beneficiaries to update their address, phone number, or payment method whenever they relocate. You can make changes through your My Social Security account, which helps ensure your payments continue without interruption.
Where Social Security payments can be sent abroad
U.S. citizens can continue receiving Social Security benefits while living outside the country, as long as they remain eligible and reside in a place where the SSA is allowed to send payments.
There are exceptions:
- The U.S. Treasury cannot send payments to people living in Cuba or North Korea.
- In most cases, the SSA also cannot send payments to residents of:Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
