President Donald Trump went off on the Canadian government in a midnight Truth Social post, with the collapse of talks between the two historic allies risking an all-out trade war.
“Canada wants the benefits of being a State, without being one!!!” the president wrote. “They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!”
The two governments have blamed each other for the collapse of negotiations in Washington on Friday, putting them deeper into a trade war over the weekend. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods, while Canada set Sept. 8 as the start of its retaliatory tariffs.

“In recent days, the U.S. proposed new terms that were uneconomic, unfair and undermine the net benefits for Canada, and called into question the reliability of any deal. In short, they asked too much and they offered too little,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday.
