Trade war escalates: Trump announces 50% tariffs on Canadian autos & steel from Jan 1

“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years,” President Donald Trump posted on social media today morning, taking aim at Canada’s trade policies and agricultural sector. “Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE!”

“They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US! They do 95% of their business with the U.S., with us, the exact opposite! Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”, the President added.

The breakdown in talks stems from sharp disagreements over sectoral protections. U.S. negotiators offered conditional tariff reductions on light-duty vehicles but declined to extend favorable terms to medium- and heavy-duty trucks, impacting prominent Canadian-built models such as Ford’s F-Series heavy-duty line and General Motors’ assembly output.

Washington also sought expanded access to Canadian critical minerals and requested concessions regarding Canada’s agricultural supply-management systems. Canadian officials withdrew their negotiating team, citing unacceptable terms that risked compromising domestic manufacturing and economic sovereignty.

In response, Ottawa announced plans to implement dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs starting September 8, targeting US steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, appliances, electronics, and paper products. Political leaders across Canadian provinces have signaled an equally firm stance against the trade measures.

“We’re not going to put up with it, Canada isn’t. We’ll fight back,” said Ontario Premier Doug Ford, suggesting that Canada should consider restricting electricity and critical-mineral exports to the United States if the dispute continues to intensify.
