Raskin: ‘Trump’s idiotic trade war killing American businesses’
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) on Sunday went after President Trump for his recent tariffs on Canada.
“Stop Trump’s idiotic trade war killing American businesses. Let peaceful commerce among the nations prevail. And hands off Canada, America’s #1 trading partner, whose people are now boycotting American products because of Trump’s imbecilic policies,” Raskin said in a post on the social platform X.
Raskin’s comments come in the wake of heated trade-related tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday removed Canadian negotiators from trade discussions with the U.S., shortly before the Trump administration’s new set of tariffs went into effect.
A day later, Carney said his country would implement retaliatory tariffs against the U.S.’s new 50 percent tariffs starting Sept. 8.
During a press conference, Carney said Canada would “match Washington’s new tariffs dollar for dollar in order to protect Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses.”
Raskin isn’t the only Democratic critic of the recent U.S. trade tensions with Canada, with Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) saying Sunday that Trump is “destroying the relationship with one of our country’s strongest allies.”

“Since Day One, Donald Trump has chosen chaos and cruelty — and by doubling down on his reckless trade war with Canada, he’s further harming our families, farmers, and small business owners,” Shapiro said in a post on X.
