Social Security is paid out on Wednesday, August 26: who receives benefits today?
In the United States, certain benefits recipients are to get their latest monthly money today, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) concludes this month’s payment schedule for the Social Security program.
Who gets Social Security today, Wednesday, August 26?
Of the 71.3 million recipients of Social Security benefits nationwide, most are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in the month, depending on their birthday.
As today is this month’s fourth Wednesday, benefits are to go out to recipients born between the 21st and the 31st of any month. This is the final Social Security payment on the SSA’s timeline for August 2026.
August’s full three-Wednesdays schedule is:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: paid on Wednesday, August 12
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: paid on Wednesday, August 19
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: paid on Wednesday, August 26
NB: If you get Social Security based on someone else’s employment history, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.

What other Social Security payment dates were there in August 2026?
Before the three-Wednesdays cycle kicked in, two groups of Social Security beneficiaries were paid on the same day in early August, per the SSA’s payment calendar.
- August 3: Certain long-term recipients
Individuals who started claiming their Social Security benefits before May 1997 were issued their money on August 3, no matter their date of birth.
- August 3: Recipients who also get SSI
Monday 3 was also August’s Social Security distribution date for beneficiaries who combine the scheme with Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a benefit for certain low-income people.
August’s SSI, meanwhile, was paid on July 31. (SSI is usually sent out on the first day of the month, but was issued early because August 1 was a weekend day.)
How much are Social Security benefits?
- Retirement: $2,031.74/month
- Disability: $1,498.43/month
- Survivor: $1,634.61/month
(Average benefit, according to stats published by the SSA.)
How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?
- Direct deposit
Social Security beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their banking information using the agency’s online my Social Security portal.
- Direct Express
Monthly benefits can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for recipients without a bank account. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
