Early next week, over seven million U.S. benefits recipients are to get their latest monthly payment from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income scheme (SSI) are scheduled to receive their program benefits for September 2026.

Each month, SSI is paid out on the first, unless – as was the case in August – that date falls on a non-business day.

Who qualifies for SSI benefits?

A needs-based benefit with 7.3 million recipients throughout the U.S., SSI is for low-income, low-resource individuals who are over 65 or have a disability.

Unlike the SSA’s Social Security program – which sends out retirement, disability and survivor benefits to more than 71 million people – eligibility for SSI is not dependent on claimants’ work history.

• Direct deposit

SSI beneficiaries can provide the SSA with their bank details at 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.

• Direct Express

SSI payments can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for receiving federal disbursements. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
