Americans really hate ‘Lake America,’ Trump’s trade war and more: New poll

President Donald Trump’s latest decisions on Canada are not resonating with Americans, a new poll showed.

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, released Tuesday, showed that most Americans disapproved of Trump’s new tariffs with Canada and his decision to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” Trade negotiations with Canada fell apart last week, leading Trump to impose new tariffs on the U.S. ally and rename one of the Great Lakes.

The poll showed that just 20% of respondents supported Trump imposing additional tariffs on Canada, while 57% disapproved. The poll found that less than half of Republicans support the tariffs, with 44% approving and 33% disapproving. Meanwhile, 82% of Democrats opposed the tariffs and just 5% supported them.

Forty percent of Americans said they expected the trade war to have a negative impact on their personal finances, while just 4% expected a positive impact. Twenty-seven percent did not expect the trade war to impact them much, while 28% said they were not sure.

Trump’s executive order renaming Lake Ontario was also met with widespread opposition, the new poll found.

Sixty-three percent of respondents opposed Trump’s executive order renaming the body of water to “Lake America” in the U.S, while just 14% supported the move. Of those who supported the executive order, just 7% said they “strongly” backed it.

Even Republicans did not approve of the executive order, with 33% supporting it and 43% opposing it. Democrats overwhelmingly opposed Trump’s decision, with 84% against it and just 6% in support of it.

The poll was conducted between Aug. 28 and Aug. 30 among 1,023 U.S. adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

Trump first floated changing the name of Lake Ontario last week after trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada fell apart. His suggestion was met with swift backlash, with many critics arguing the president should be focused on more pressing issues.

Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes, sits on the northern portion of New York and the southern portion of the Canadian province. This is not the first time that Trump has signed an executive order changing the name of a body of water.

Last year, Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed to the “Gulf of America.” CNN reported that support for renaming the Gulf of Mexico was twice as high as it is for renaming Lake Ontario.
