This week in the U.S., certain Social Security recipients are due to get their latest monthly benefits, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) begins September 2026’s three-Wednesdays payment cycle.
Who gets Social Security benefits on Wednesday, September 9?
Of the just over 71 million recipients of Social Security benefits nationwide, most are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month, depending on their birthday.
As September 9 is this month’s second Wednesday, Social Security payments are to go out to beneficiaries born between the first and 10th of any month.
September’s complete three-Wednesdays cycle is:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: benefits paid out on Wednesday, September 9
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: benefits paid out on Wednesday, September 16
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: benefits paid out on Wednesday, September 23
NB: If you claim Social Security based on someone else’s work history, the SSA uses the other person’s birthday.

What other Social Security payment dates are there in September 2026?
- September 3: Certain long-term beneficiaries
On Thursday, September 3, this month’s Social Security benefits were to be sent out to recipients who began claiming their monthly payments before May 1997.
- September 3: Dual beneficiaries
Thursday 3 was also September’s Social Security distribution date for beneficiaries who simultaneously receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.
A scheme for certain low-income, low-resource people, SSI differs from the Social Security program as it is needs-based. Unlike Social Security, an SSI claimant’s eligibility for benefits does not depend on their employment record.
Worth an average of $736.54 per month, according to the SSA’s latest figures, SSI was due to be issued for September on Tuesday 1.
