The latest widely cited forecast projects a 3.6% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027. That is an estimate, not the official increase, and no across-the-board reduction in current Social Security checks has been approved for 2027.

The confusion appears to stem partly from a Social Security Administration webpage analyzing proposals that could reduce future cost-of-living adjustments beginning in December 2027. The page does not announce a new policy. It provides actuarial estimates showing what would happen if lawmakers adopted various proposals to strengthen Social Security’s finances.

The Senior Citizens League now estimates the 2027 COLA at 3.6%, down from its earlier 3.8% projection in July and 3.9% forecast in May. The official adjustment will be determined by federal inflation data and announced in October.
