What changes are coming to Social Security in 2027? New COLA forecast released
Social Security beneficiaries are seeing a flood of headlines about 2027, including a new COLA forecast, proposed changes to inflation adjustments and warnings about future benefit reductions.
The latest widely cited forecast projects a 3.6% Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2027. That is an estimate, not the official increase, and no across-the-board reduction in current Social Security checks has been approved for 2027.
The confusion appears to stem partly from a Social Security Administration webpage analyzing proposals that could reduce future cost-of-living adjustments beginning in December 2027. The page does not announce a new policy. It provides actuarial estimates showing what would happen if lawmakers adopted various proposals to strengthen Social Security’s finances.

The Senior Citizens League now estimates the 2027 COLA at 3.6%, down from its earlier 3.8% projection in July and 3.9% forecast in May. The official adjustment will be determined by federal inflation data and announced in October.
What is the latest Social Security COLA forecast for 2027?
The latest forecast calls for a 3.6% COLA in 2027. The official figure will be announced Oct. 14 after the final inflation data used in the calculation is released.
If a retiree receives a $2,000 monthly benefit, a 3.6% increase would add about $72 per month. A $2,500 monthly benefit would increase by roughly $90.
Are Social Security benefits being reduced in 2027?
No broad reduction in Social Security benefits has been approved for 2027.

Much of the confusion stems from SSA analyses that model potential reforms, including lower future COLAs, alternative inflation measures and benefit increases for certain groups. None have been enacted.
How is the 2027 Social Security COLA calculated?
The Social Security Administration bases its annual adjustment on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly called the CPI-W.
The calculation compares the average CPI-W from July, August and September 2026 with the corresponding third-quarter average used for the previous COLA. The percentage increase, rounded to the nearest one-tenth of 1%, becomes the 2027 adjustment.
July inflation data showed consumer prices were up 3.4% from a year earlier, helping shape current 2027 COLA forecasts.
When will the 2027 Social Security COLA be announced?
The official 2027 Social Security COLA is expected to be announced Oct. 14, after the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its September inflation report and completes the three-month measurement period.

The increase would apply to Social Security benefits paid beginning in January 2027. SSI recipients typically receive their first COLA-adjusted payment at the end of December because Jan. 1 is a federal holiday.
What other Social Security changes could happen in 2027?
Based on inflation and wage trends, the government may adjust the amount of earnings subject to Social Security taxes, earnings limits for beneficiaries who work before full retirement age and the maximum possible retirement benefit. The official 2027 figures have not yet been announced.
Will Social Security checks be reduced when the trust fund runs out?
Probably not in 2027.
SSA says payroll tax revenue would still be sufficient to pay about three-fourths of scheduled benefits even after trust fund reserves are depleted.

That issue is projected for the next decade, not 2027, which is why most retirees are currently focused on next year’s COLA announcement.
The latest estimate stands at 3.6%, with the official figure expected Oct. 14.
