Social Security is being paid out on Wednesday, September 9: who gets benefits today?
Across the United States, millions of Social Security beneficiaries are to receive their latest monthly payment today, as the Social Security Administration (SSA) kicks off its three-Wednesdays distribution cycle for September 2026.
Who receives Social Security today, Wednesday, September 9?
Of the 71 million recipients of Social Security in the U.S., many get their money on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month, depending on their date of birth.
As today is the second Wednesday in September, payments are to be sent out to beneficiaries born from the first to the 10th of any month.
September 2026’s complete three-Wednesdays cycle is:
- Born on 1st-10th of month: paid on Wednesday, September 9
- Born on 11th-20th of month: paid on Wednesday, September 16
- Born on 21st-31st of month: paid on Wednesday, September 23
NB: If you receive Social Security benefits based on someone else’s employment record, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.

What other Social Security payment runs are there in September?
- Thursday, September 3: Some long-term recipients
On September 3, this month’s Social Security benefits were issued to recipients who started receiving their monthly payments before May 1997.
- Thursday, September 3: Twin beneficiaries
Thursday 3 was also this month’s Social Security payment date for beneficiaries who also claim Supplemental Security Income (SSI) at the same time.
A benefit for certain low-income people, SSI differs from the Social Security scheme as it is needs-based. Unlike Social Security, an SSI claimant’s eligibility for benefits is not dependent on their work history.

How much are monthly Social Security benefits?
- Retirement: $2,031.74

- Survivor: $1,634.61
Average monthly benefit, according to figures shared by the SSA.
How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?
- Direct deposit
Social Security beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their bank-account information using the SSA’s online “my Social Security” tool.
- Direct Express
Benefits can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for federal disbursements. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
