Certain Social Security recipients are to get their latest monthly benefits next week, as the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) completes the program’s payment timeline for September 2026.
Who gets Social Security on Wednesday, September 23?
Of the 71 million recipients of Social Security benefits, many are issued their money on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month, depending on their date of birth.
As September 23 is the fourth Wednesday in the month, Social Security is to be sent out to beneficiaries born from the 21st to 31st of any month.

What other Social Security payment runs are there in September?
September 23 is the last of five Social Security payment dates on this month’s SSA schedule.
Before the three-Wednesdays cycle kicked in, two groups of beneficiaries were paid on a date that was not birthday-dependent, per the SSA’s distribution calendar:
- Thursday, September 3: Twin recipients and certain long-term beneficiaries
On Thursday 3, September’s Social Security was to be issued to beneficiaries who began claiming their monthly payments before May 1997.
Thursday 3 was also September’s Social Security payment date for individuals who simultaneously claim Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
A benefit for certain low-income people, SSI differs from the Social Security scheme as it is needs-based. Unlike Social Security, SSI eligibility does not depend on a claimant’s employment record.
Worth a monthly average of $736.54, according to the SSA, SSI was paid for September on Tuesday 1.
