Late next week, just over seven million benefits recipients in the U.S. are due to get their latest payment from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Who is paid by the Social Security Admin on Thursday, October 1?
Beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme are scheduled to be sent their monthly money for October 2026.
Each month, SSI payments are issued on the first – unless, as will be the case in November, that date falls on a non-business day.
So what’ll happen with November’s SSI?
Because November 2026 kicks off on a Sunday, that month’s SSI will be paid on the earliest working day before then: Friday, October 30.
Who qualifies for SSI in the U.S.?
A needs-based benefits program with 7.306 million recipients nationwide, per the SSA’s latest figures, SSI is for low-income, low-resource Americans who are over 65 or have a disability.
Unlike the SSA’s Social Security program – which distributes retirement, disability and survivor benefits to some 71.5 million people in the U.S. – eligibility for SSI is not dependent on a claimant’s employment history.

When will the 2027 COLA be announced? How much will it be?
The SSA is due to confirm its latest annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. A measure designed to ensure that SSI and Social Security benefits keep pace with inflation, the upcoming COLA is projected to bring a 3.5% increase in monthly payments, according to experts at the Senior Citizens League.
The COLA will take effect starting with benefits paid out for January 2027. For SSI beneficiaries, next year’s opening payment is to be made on Thursday, December 31, 2026.
How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?
- Direct deposit
SSI beneficiaries can supply the SSA with their bank details at 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
- Direct Express
Benefits can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for recipients who do not have a bank account. Sign up for Direct Express at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
