When do Social Security and SSI go out in September 2026? Complete benefits payment schedule
Per the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) official schedule, the agency has now completed its five payment runs for September 2026, as it issues benefits across the U.S. for the following programs:
September 2026’s three-Wednesdays cycle: complete
Of the 71.5 million recipients of Social Security, many get their money on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month, with each of these payment days allocated depending on a recipient’s date of birth.
In September, this three-Wednesdays cycle concluded this week:
NB: If you receive Social Security benefits based on someone else’s employment history, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.
What other payment dates were there in September 2026?
Per the SSA’s calendar, September had two further benefits-distribution dates, neither of which was birthday-dependent. They were at the beginning of the month, before the three-Wednesdays cycle kicked in:
- Tuesday, September 1: SSI paid out
On Tuesday 1, the SSA made September’s SSI payments.
A benefits scheme for low-income, low-resource individuals who are over the age of 65 or have a disability, SSI is separate to the Social Security program. Unlike Social Security, whose claimants must earn work credits to qualify, eligibility for SSI is not dependent on a recipient’s employment record.

- September 3: Social Security paid to dual beneficiaries/some long-term recipients
On Thursday 3, the SSA issued September’s Social Security payments to recipients who started getting their monthly benefits before May 1997.
September 3 was also this month’s Social Security payment date for beneficiaries who concurrently receive SSI.

- Social Security retirement: $2,033.27
- Social Security disability: $1,498.94
- Social Security survivor: $1,635.70
- Supplemental Security Income: $738.73

- Benefits can be transferred into a beneficiary’s bank account by direct deposit
- Money can be paid onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for recipients without a bank account
