Social Security: Children of older parents could qualify to collect benefits
(NewsNation) — Children of retirees who receive Social Security may qualify for benefits under current rules of the program.
The benefit, which approximately 714,000 people receive each year, is for children of retirees.
“Many people don’t know of this rule, especially because it’s not necessarily that common for someone who is 62 to have a child under 19,” Moneywise’s Christy Bieber says. “In fact, as of January, just 1% of Social Security beneficiaries were kids of retired workers.”

Under current regulations, children of retirees may qualify for benefits when a parent begins receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits.
The benefits paid to children come with no restrictions on how the money can be used.

“There is a limit, however, to the amount of money we can pay to a family,” the agency states. “The maximum family payment is determined as part of every Social Security benefit computation. It can be from 150% to 180% of the parent’s full benefit amount.”
“If the total amount payable to all family members exceeds this limit, we reduce each person’s benefit proportionately until the total equals the maximum allowable amount. We do not reduce the parent’s benefit amount because it’s not part of the maximum allowable amount.”
