Later this week, millions of benefits recipients in the U.S. are to be issued their latest monthly payment by the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Who gets paid by the Social Security Admin on Thursday, October 1?
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are due to be distributed their money for October 2026.
SSI is issued on the first of each month – unless, as will be the case in November, that date is a non-working day.
So what happens in November?
Because November 2026 begins on a Sunday, that month’s SSI benefits will be paid out on the nearest business day before then: Friday, October 30.
Who is eligible for SSI in the U.S.?
A needs-based scheme with just over 7.3 million recipients, according to the SSA’s latest figures, SSI is for low-income Americans who are over 65 or have a disability.
Unlike the SSA’s Social Security program – which pays retirement, disability and survivor benefits to some 71.5 million people – eligibility for SSI does not depend on a claimant’s work record.

When is the 2027 COLA announced?
The SSA is due to reveal its latest cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. An annual measure designed to ensure that SSI and Social Security benefits maintain pace with inflation, the upcoming COLA is expected to bring a 3.5% increase in monthly payments, per experts at the Senior Citizens League.
The COLA will come into effect starting with benefits paid out for January 2027. For SSI beneficiaries, next year’s opening payment is set for Thursday, December 31, 2026.

- Direct deposit
SSI beneficiaries can provide their bank details to the SSA at 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
- Direct Express
Money can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for recipients without a bank account. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
