When are Social Security and SSI benefits paid out in October 2026? Complete payment schedule
According to the U.S. agency’s official schedule, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is today due to complete the first of its five payment runs for October 2026, as it sends out benefits for the following programs:
Who gets paid first in October 2026?
- Thursday, October 1: SSI recipients
Today, Thursday 1, the SSA is scheduled to issue October’s monthly payments for the SSI program. A benefit for low-income, low-resource individuals who are over 65 or have a disability, SSI is worth an average of $738.73 per month, per the SSA’s latest published figures.
SSI, which has just over 7.3 million beneficiaries, is separate to the Social Security program. Unlike Social Security, whose claimants must accumulate work credits to qualify, eligibility for SSI does not depend on a recipient’s employment history.

When does October 2026’s three-Wednesdays cycle kick in?
Of the 71.5 million Americans who are signed up to the Social Security program, many are paid on the second, third or fourth Wednesday in each month. These recipients’ designated payment day is determined by their birthday.
In October 2026, this three-Wednesdays payment cycle kicks off in just under two weeks’ time:
- Born on 1st-10th of any month: Social Security paid out on Wednesday, October 14
- Born on 11th-20th of any month: Social Security paid out on Wednesday, October 21
- Born on 21st-31st of any month: Social Security paid out on Wednesday, October 28
NB: If you claim Social Security based on someone else’s work record, the SSA uses the other person’s date of birth.
What other Social Security payment dates are there in October 2026?
According to the SSA’s official calendar, there is one further Social Security payment run in October – a distribution date that is not birthday-dependent:
- Friday, October 2: Social Security paid to double beneficiaries/some long-standing recipients
On Friday 2, the SSA is to issue October’s Social Security payments to beneficiaries who began receiving their monthly money before May 1997. Meanwhile, October 2 is also this month’s Social Security distribution date for recipients who simultaneously claim SSI benefits.
Both groups of recipients above usually get their Social Security on the third of the month, but payment has been brought forward as October 3 is a non-business day.
How much Social Security benefits?
- Social Security retirement: $2,033.27
- Social Security disability: $1,498.94
- Social Security survivor: $1,635.70
(Average monthly benefit, per stats shared by the SSA.)
2027 COLA set for announcement: projected benefits increase
In a bid to ensure Social Security and SSI benefits keep pace with inflation, the SSA is due to confirm its annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) on Wednesday, October 14.
Per the latest projection by the Senior Citizens League, the agency is expected to raise monthly payments by 3.5%, as part of a measure that takes effect in January 2027.
