Social Security recipients are set to get a massive benefit increase in 2027, reports suggest. The latest forecast suggests that the Social Security Administration’s 2027 COLA adjustment for retirees will provide a clear picture of their monthly benefit in the coming year.
According to Delaware Online, recent estimates suggest that 2027 Social Security cost-of-living adjustments could range from 3.5% to 3.6%. The outlet reported the forecast from AARP, the Senior Citizens League and independent analyst Mary Johnson. The publication also reported that if these projections prove true, the Social Security increase for 2027 could exceed the 2.8% adjustment beneficiaries received in 2026. Not only that, but the adjustment will be the biggest annual benefit increase since 2023.
For a million retirees, the forecast percentage matters a lot. This is because the annual adjustment determines how much money arrives in their monthly checks.
COLA 2027 is expected to be high
Per The Independent, a 3.5 percent increase would raise the average benefit payment from $1,941.76 to $2,009.72. This is according to the Social Security Administration’s latest data. However, the reports also suggest that even though the projected increase is the highest in the last four years, it still won’t be enough to provide a stable retirement.
Shannon Benton, executive director of The Senior Citizens League, mentioned,
“No matter if the COLA announcement comes in slightly higher or slightly lower than our prediction, seniors will probably end up disappointed in the long run.”
Several retirees have a fixed income with little to no opportunity to increase it. This puts them in a more financially vulnerable condition when compared to the cost of living.
The latest calculated increase won’t provide much benefit for retirees because the cost of living is rising faster than the average inflation rate, especially from July to August compared with the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the Senior Citizens League also argues that because of the inflation in the country, the increase that will begin on January 1 won’t help the seniors.
Social Security COLA adjustment track record of past four years
The Social Security Administration changes benefits every year through a cost-of-living adjustment meant to keep pace with inflation.
According to experts, the 2027 COLA raise will hit a four-year high since 2023. Per the Senior Citizens League, 2023 was the highest, at 8.7%. Before that, in 2022 it was 5.9%. However, after 2023, it fell to 3.2% in 2024, 2.5% in 2025, and 2.8% in 2026.
For those who don’t know, the Social Security system was created to provide American workers with a stable source of retirement income.
