Stock Market News, Oct. 5, 2026: 10-Year Yield Rises; Nasdaq Jumps to New High
Treasury yields traded higher to start the week, with the benchmark U.S. 10-year yield closing at fresh multidecade highs.
The Nasdaq composite meanwhile led stock indexes, closing 1.1% higher at a new record. Also snagging an all-time high: Nvidia, the world’s largest company by market cap.
The moves came on a choppy Monday that saw modest fluctuations turn more definitive in afternoon trading. AI names benefited in part from French engineering firm Schneider Electric’s agreement to buy U.S. software maker PTC, a deal designed to prepare its portfolio for industrial artificial intelligence. PTC shares, up 33%, were the best performer in the S&P 500.
In bonds, the U.S. 10-year yield closed at 5.31%, the highest closing level since April 2002. The yield rise was backed by strong economic data, continued concerns about inflation and looming Treasury auctions later this week.
The dollar edged higher Monday, close to an almost 18-month peak against a basket of currencies. In Brazil, stocks jumped and the real is rallying more than 4% against the dollar after a first-round victory last night by Flávio Bolsonaro against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Oil prices were down following an agreement Friday by G-7 countries to release crude and diesel reserves. Benchmark Brent crude futures were off 1.9% to $100.32 a barrel.
