The stock market makes an exception for Columbus Day
Columbus Day may be a federal holiday, but it’s not one that the stock market closes for.
Columbus Day commemorates Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer who led an exploration to the Americas in 1492. While it was first celebrated as a federal proclamation in 1892, it’s not one of the federal holidays the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq chose to close for.
Is the stock market closed on Columbus Day? When is it usually open?
The New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets will all be open on Monday, Oct. 12. Those markets are typically open Monday through Friday, aside from select holidays.
When will the stock market reopen?
Trading will open at the standard 9:30 a.m.
When is the next federal holiday?
The next federal holiday is Veterans Day on Nov. 11 followed by Thanksgiving on Nov. 26. The stock market stays open on Veterans Day, but will close for Thanksgiving.
