Up 10% in the Last Two Weeks, Is Airbnb the Perfect Stock for Today's Market?
Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) has mostly been a disappointment for investors after initially surging out of the gate in its 2020 IPO, but in 2026, the stock is finally gaining momentum.
The #1 home-sharing platform has delivered better-than-expected growth, solid margins, and it’s leveraging AI to improve user satisfaction. Meanwhile, it is expanding its platform with expanded experiences and guest services offerings.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a “Double Down” signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same “Total Conviction” signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Over the last two weeks, the stock is up 9.4%, even as the S&P 500 has fallen 1.6%, as the chart below shows.
Airbnb’s gains have come as the tech sector has tumbled on concerns about an AI bubble and rising interest rates. However, the company has demonstrated its resilience and is well-positioned to thrive in such an environment. Here are three reasons why Airbnb is poised to be a winner in today’s stock market.

1. It wins on high interest rates
Stock investors generally dislike rising interest rates. After all, higher interest rates tend to make the bond market more attractive, leading investors to rotate out of stocks and into bonds. Additionally, higher interest rates put pressure on high-priced stocks like much of the tech sector, as it makes future earnings less valuable due to a higher discount rate in the discounted cash flow.
Normally, a company like Airbnb would be susceptible to that pressure, but the home-sharing leader actually earns significant profit from interest income thanks to the funds it holds in between customer bookings and disbursement. Through the first half of the year, it’s earned $363 million in interest income, more than a third of its before-tax profit, and that number is likely to go up as interest rates go up. As of the end of the second quarter, the company held $12.2 billion in “funds receivable and amounts held on behalf of customers,” on which it earns interest. That’s a substantial advantage of its business model and gives it resilience when many of its tech stock peers are falling in the face of higher interest rates.
2. It won’t be disrupted by agentic AI
The launch of Meta Platforms’ Muse also exposed a hidden advantage of Airbnb. Unlike its online travel agency (OTA) rivals Expedia and Booking, Airbnb’s inventory is mostly specific to its platform. Expedia and Booking, on the other hand, are essentially middlemen, connecting users to hotels and acting as a clearinghouse for hotels that want to get their listings in front of prospective customers.
Tools like Muse make it easy for users to book directly with a given hotel or with the platform that offers the lowest price. It eliminates the friction that might ordinarily lead users to book directly on Expedia and Booking. Airbnb doesn’t have this problem, as homestays don’t typically offer the option of booking directly. That’s one of the benefits Airbnb provides to its hosts, and it should give it an advantage if users continue to adopt AI agents.
3. The travel sector continues to outperform
While other discretionary sectors struggle, Airbnb and its travel stock peers have continued to deliver solid growth. Despite concerns about inflation, stock and home values remain at all-time highs, enabling wealthier people to spend on vacations and travel.
A number of other factors support that trend, including record wealth among the baby boomer generation and a preference for spending money on experiences over things among younger adults. Additionally, social media has helped stoke wanderlust, and the pandemic may have convinced people to travel while they have the opportunity.
Those tailwinds might not be permanent for Airbnb, but the current strength of the travel sector shows its advantages over other consumer-facing industries.
Taken together, those three factors make the stock a good bet to continue outperforming.
