Did JD Vance compare US economy to Titanic?
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance once said, “You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight. It takes time to fix what was broken,” describing the state of the U.S. economy.
A rumor that U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance once compared the United States economy to the RMS Titanic, a purportedly unsinkable ship that famously sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912, circulated in October.
Users on social media shared the following alleged quote from Vance: “You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight. It takes time to fix what was broken.”
Some posts included a screenshot of Vance speaking at a lectern, suggesting he made the comment during a public address.
The rumor circulated as the 2026 U.S. midterm elections approached, with the Trump administration offering differing takes on the state of the economy and polls showing Americans’ faith in the economy is at its lowest in over a decade.
VD Vance asks a crowd of people for patience with the economy. “You cannot turn the Titanic around overnight” he said. Well, you Should Not Drive the Ship Straight for the Iceberg Either !!! Trump is full speed ahead & going straight into the iceberg. #VoteBlue

The statement was correctly attributed to Vance, though some posts presenting it as a recent comment were mistaken.
The vice president made the statement during a speech in Toledo, Ohio, on Jan. 22, 2026.
The White House posted about Vance’s appearance on its official website and hosted a video of the speech on its official YouTube channel.
The “Titanic” line in question occurs near the 19:51 mark in the White House’s recording of the speech. In context, Vance was talking about the recently inaugurated second Trump administration attempting to address economic issues it blamed on former President Joe Biden.

The full context of the statement was (emphasis ours):
The Democrats talk a lot about the affordability crisis in the United States of America. And yes, there is an affordability crisis. One created by Joe Biden’s policies. You don’t turn the Titanic around overnight. It takes time to fix what was broken.
Some commentators pointed out and criticised Vance’s turn of phrase at the time.
For instance, podcast host Brian Tyler Cohen made a social media joke wondering if Vance knew what actually happened to the Titanic. Media outlet The Daily Beast published an article that collected a sampling of criticisms of the Titanic comment and added, “Vance also seems to have missed the climax of the 1997 hit film of the same name, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.”
We reached out to the office of the vice president for further comment on comparing the economy to the Titanic and will update this article if we hear back.
For further reading on things Vance has allegedly said, Snopes previously investigated claims that the vice president once said people born to noncitizens should be deported as well as rumors that he encouraged supporters to “vote against the crazy leadership” in Washington, D.C.
