The Social Security sweet spot: Finding your perfect claiming age
DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) -Americans can typically claim Social Security retirement benefits as early as 62. But you don’t become eligible for your full benefit (known as your primary insurance amount) until you reach your full retirement age which is 67 for most people.
It is also possible to delay Social Security until age 70 for those that want to maximize benefits. The flip side is that you’ll collect fewer checks overall.
To help viewers understand when to consider claiming benefits (especially when upwards of $100K could be at stake) Heidi Huiskamp Collins of Huiskamp Collins Investments LLC, joined Quad Cities Live for a sponsored segment focused that issue.
The following questions are addressed during the discussion:
- Lots of people decide to claim social security at 62, but are there downsides to this?
- What happens if you go the other way and wait?
- Can you talk about the break-even point?
- What factors SHOULD you consider when making your decision?
