US Stock Futures Mixed Ahead of Alphabet, Microsoft Earnings and Federal Reserve Rate Decision: Dow Jones, S&P, Nasdaq, Wall Street
US stock futures traded in mixed territory on Wednesday as investors prepared for quarterly results from major technology companies and the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate decision. Alphabet and Microsoft are scheduled to report after the market closes, while stronger-than-expected earnings from South Korean semiconductor manufacturer SK Hynix provided further evidence of demand linked to artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Market attention remained focused on the scale of technology companies’ capital expenditure, the financial returns generated by AI investments and the possibility of further US monetary tightening before the end of the year.
US Stock Futures Show Mixed Performance
US equity futures recorded modest movements in early trading on Wednesday.
At 04:02 ET (08:02 GMT), S&P 500 futures were up 10 points, or 0.1%, while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 173 points, equivalent to 0.6%. Dow Jones futures declined 117 points, or 0.2%.
The mixed performance followed gains across Wall Street’s major indices in the previous session, when the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.18%, supported by technology shares.
Recent financing announcements involving artificial intelligence companies helped improve sentiment towards the sector. Investors also assessed Anthropic’s initial public offering filing earlier in the week, alongside continued financing activity supporting the expansion of AI infrastructure.
Analysts at Vital Knowledge said investors were responding positively to the availability of funding for data centre development.
“[I]nvestors continue to celebrate the AI funding announcements that hit the tape over the last 36 hours […] as these demonstrate that plenty of money still exists to underwrite the data center bonanza,” the analysts wrote.
The broader US corporate earnings season is approximately one-third complete, with results generally supported by resilient demand, cost controls and price increases, according to the firm.
Alphabet and Microsoft Earnings Put AI Investment Returns in Focus
Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are scheduled to release quarterly financial results after Wednesday’s closing bell.
Their announcements are expected to provide further information about demand for cloud computing services, artificial intelligence products and the infrastructure required to support these technologies.
Investors will examine whether substantial expenditure on data centres, specialised processors and computing capacity is translating into measurable revenue growth.
Capital expenditure has become an important consideration for technology sector valuations as major companies commit increasingly large amounts to AI infrastructure.
Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), which is scheduled to report on Thursday, are collectively planning capital expenditure of as much as $600 billion this year.
The scale of these commitments has raised questions about the timing of investment returns and the sustainability of spending growth.
Investors will therefore assess both the companies’ quarterly operating performance and any changes to their future capital expenditure forecasts.
Meta’s Spending Plans Highlight Investor Concerns
The market reaction to Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) earlier this month illustrated the importance investors are placing on AI investment costs.
Despite reporting strong underlying business performance, Meta faced selling pressure after increasing its capital expenditure plans.
Its shares declined following the announcement and were down more than 4% for the year at the time of the report.
The company recorded nearly $34 billion in capital expenditure during a single quarter, highlighting the scale of investment required to develop AI infrastructure.
Jake Behan, Head of Capital Markets at Direxion, said investors are increasingly examining the financial returns associated with this spending.
“The more skeptical the market gets about AI returns, the harder it becomes to justify today’s pace of spending. Meta is a good example: the core business was shown to be strong, but with capex hitting nearly $34 billion in a single quarter, the market increasingly needs to see the ROI from that investment,” Behan said.
The forthcoming results from Alphabet and Microsoft will provide another opportunity for investors to assess the relationship between AI spending and business growth.
SK Hynix Reports Sharp Increase in Third-Quarter Profit
SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) reported a substantial increase in third-quarter earnings on Wednesday, exceeding analysts’ expectations.
The South Korean memory chip manufacturer recorded operating profit of 83.33 trillion won for the three months ended September 30, an increase of 632% from the previous year.
The result exceeded the Bloomberg consensus estimate of 77.5 trillion won.
Revenue increased 328% to a record 104.615 trillion won, while net income rose 216% to 39.78 trillion won.
Shares of SK Hynix advanced more than 10% during trading in Seoul following the announcement.
The company also outlined plans to return a total of 100 trillion won, equivalent to approximately $75.5 billion, to shareholders during the year.
SK Hynix is a major supplier of memory semiconductors used in advanced computing systems, including infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence applications.
Its quarterly performance provided an additional indication of the financial impact of investment in AI-related hardware.
Semiconductor Demand Remains Linked to AI Infrastructure Expansion
The results from SK Hynix highlighted the importance of semiconductor demand in the wider artificial intelligence investment cycle.
AI systems require substantial computing capacity, supported by specialised processors and advanced memory technologies.
The expansion of data centres and high-performance computing infrastructure has increased the importance of semiconductor manufacturers within the technology supply chain.
SK Hynix’s reported revenue and profit growth reflected its position in this market.
However, investors continue to assess whether strong demand for AI hardware will be matched by sufficient revenue growth among the companies developing and operating AI services.
This distinction remains relevant as technology groups prepare to publish updated capital expenditure plans.
Federal Reserve Expected to Hold Interest Rates
The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged at its Wednesday policy meeting.
The anticipated decision follows an increase in borrowing costs in September, the first such move since 2023.
Although markets expect no immediate adjustment, interest rate futures indicate an approximately 75% probability of another increase at the central bank’s final meeting of the year in December.
Investors will focus on Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s press conference for indications of how policymakers are assessing inflation, economic growth and the need for further monetary tightening.
Warsh has generally avoided providing explicit guidance about future interest rate decisions, meaning market participants may receive limited indications about the December outlook.
Nevertheless, comments from other Federal Reserve officials have suggested that additional rate increases could be required to address persistent inflationary pressures.
Higher Interest Rates Could Affect AI Financing Costs
The Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook is particularly relevant to companies financing large technology infrastructure projects.
Higher borrowing costs can increase the expense of funding data centres, semiconductor facilities and other AI-related investments.
They can also influence the returns required by investors when evaluating capital-intensive projects.
Direxion’s Jake Behan noted that additional monetary tightening could “raise the cost of funding the AI buildout while simultaneously raising the hurdle for the returns needed to justify it.”
This relationship between interest rates and investment returns adds another consideration for technology companies undertaking substantial capital expenditure programmes.
Investors will therefore assess the Federal Reserve’s comments alongside the latest financial results from Alphabet, Microsoft and other major technology groups.
Oil Prices Continue to Influence Inflation Expectations
Energy markets remain an important factor in the outlook for US monetary policy.
Crude oil prices have risen substantially following disruptions to Middle Eastern supplies associated with the conflict involving Iran, which began in late February.
Higher oil prices have increased the cost of products including gasoline and diesel.
Economists are monitoring whether these increases are being passed through to transportation expenses and the prices of other goods and services.
A broader increase in inflation could influence the Federal Reserve’s assessment of whether additional interest rate increases are necessary.
Brent crude futures were trading 1.2% higher at $115.29 per barrel in the latest figures cited.
Middle East Developments Add to Energy Market Uncertainty
Diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions involving Iran have attracted attention from energy and financial markets.
However, the conflict has continued to affect the wider Middle East, with uncertainty surrounding the prospects for a sustained reduction in hostilities.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States had advised Gulf Arab countries to prepare for the possibility of a short, intensive military campaign following the US midterm elections in November.
The report added to uncertainty surrounding the regional security outlook and potential disruptions to energy supplies.
Continued instability in the Middle East could influence crude oil prices and, consequently, inflation expectations in major economies.
For US financial markets, the interaction between energy prices, monetary policy and corporate financing costs remains an important consideration.
Outlook for US Equity Markets
US stock futures traded without a clear direction on Wednesday as investors awaited major technology earnings and the Federal Reserve’s interest rate announcement.
S&P 500 futures gained 0.1%, Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.6% and Dow futures declined 0.2% in early trading.
Alphabet and Microsoft are due to report after the closing bell, with attention focused on cloud revenue growth, AI infrastructure spending and the financial returns generated by those investments.
SK Hynix provided a positive semiconductor sector update, reporting a 632% increase in operating profit and a 328% rise in revenue.
The Federal Reserve is expected to maintain interest rates, although markets continue to anticipate the possibility of another increase in December.
Investors will also monitor Middle Eastern developments and crude oil prices for their potential effects on inflation and future monetary policy.
