Cathie Wood’s ARK Invest added 88,013 Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP) shares on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. That was the same session the stock fell 8.74% to $142.57 after its third-quarter report, and the purchase was worth about $12.5 million at Tuesday’s close.
Volume, 24.8 million shares versus 13.9 million on Monday, indicated heavy selling. Buyers returned after a $136.43 open and $135.65 low, about 13.2% below Monday’s $156.22 close, cutting the loss to $13.65.
After-hours trading extended the decline, with shares at $141.25 at 7:59 p.m. ET, down 0.93%. Shopify is valued at $173.88 billion, inside a 52-week range of $94.00 to $180.88.
What ARK Bought, and What It Sold First
The buy covered 63,238 shares in ARK Innovation ETF (BATS:ARKK). It also included 17,129 shares in ARK Next Generation Internet ETF (CBOE:ARKW) and 7,646 shares in ARK Blockchain & Fintech Innovation ETF (CBOE:ARKF). Each was about 0.15% of its fund.
ARK reveals no execution price, so the value ranges from $11.9 million at the low to $13.1 million at the high. It was still ARK’s largest purchase of the day, ahead of 63,638 Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) shares bought across five funds.

ARK sold 304,766 Shopify shares between October 8 and October 23, when closes ran from $164.56 to $178.14. Tuesday’s buy equals about 29% of those shares, so it partly reverses a trim.
Shopify was ARKK’s No. 8 holding at 3.15% and ARKF’s largest at 8.84% in filings that appear to precede the buy. The purchase would add about 5.3% and 1.9% to those stakes. ARK gave no reason for the trade.
Strong Growth Met Narrow Misses
Revenue rose 32% to $3,742 million, and gross merchandise volume (GMV), the total value of goods merchants sell through Shopify, grew 29% to $119,145 million. Operating income climbed 66% to $568 million, and free cash flow hit $816 million, a 22% margin.
Revenue still came in barely shy of the $3.75 billion consensus, its first miss since 2022. Subscription revenue of $836 million trailed the $850.2 million estimate, and GMV missed the $120.03 billion forecast, although adjusted EPS of 49 cents beat the 46 cents estimate.
AI Costs Arrive Before AI Revenue
President Harley Finkelstein said, “AI traffic is up 2.6x year-over-year. Orders are growing even faster at 3.3x.” Shopify is paying to capture that shopping, and the cost shows up first in one margin line.
CFO Jeff Hoffmeister said, “Subscription solutions gross margins compressed primarily from incremental AI spend on Sidekick, partially offset by efficiencies in support.” Sidekick is Shopify’s AI assistant for merchants. Overall gross margin of 47.6% was “consistent with the second quarter,” and operating margin rose to 15.2% from 12.1%.
Should You Buy or Sell SHOP Stock
The fundamentals make a stronger case for Shopify after this drop than ARK’s small add does. Scale benefits are real. Operating income is growing about twice as fast as revenue, and a 22% free cash flow margin funds the AI build without leaning on debt.
The misses were narrow, and the margin pressure sits in one segment tied to a product merchants are using more. Guidance calls for fourth-quarter revenue growth in the low-thirties and gross profit growth in the high-twenties. Valuation is the main risk, because a P/E near 141x leaves little room for another shortfall.
The holiday season is the test, with Black Friday on November 27 and Hoffmeister citing spending “ahead of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.” If the fourth-quarter report misses that low-thirties guide, or shares close below the $135.65 low, this view is wrong.
