Dow nearly flat as stocks erase early gains in afternoon trading

The S&P 500 was losing less than 0.1%, leaving it nearly flat at 5,827 as of 1:35 p.m. Eastern time, according to FactSet data.

The Nasdaq was dipping 0.2% to around 18,648, after trading in record territory in the morning session.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was also erasing most of its morning advance and up less than 0.1%, at 42,267.
