Plans for West Bridgford retirement complex downsized to ‘smaller scheme’ and to be submitted next year
McCarthy Stone, the retirement home developer behind the West Bridgford project, has announced changes to its original scheme, shifting its plans for a large-scale retirement complex to a smaller, more market-responsive development.
The site, located on the grounds of the former police station, has remained an empty, boarded wasteland since the station’s demolition.
The police station was demolished in September 2022.
The company confirmed this week that they are “very much committed to the West Bridgford scheme.” Discussions with Rushcliffe Borough Council have led McCarthy Stone to adapt their plans, with the intention of pursuing a scaled-down proposal that is better suited to current market demands.
A spokesperson told The Wire today: “Following discussions with Rushcliffe Borough Council, [we] are looking to pursue a smaller scheme that better responds to the current housing market.”

McCarthy Stone indicated that further details will be made available to the public in the coming months.
The original scheme, which received planning permission in 2022, envisioned a substantial retirement complex to replace the former police station. However, with shifts in housing demand and economic conditions, McCarthy Stone has opted to rethink the size and scope of the development.

Local residents have watched the site linger as an unused expanse bordered by the developer’s branding, but this fresh approach could mark a new chapter. The forthcoming, smaller-scale scheme aims to strike a balance between community needs and the realities of the housing market in 2024.
