Denzel Washington reveals cut “kiss of death” scene in Gladiator II, discusses his retirement plans
In a candid interview with Gayety, Denzel Washington revealed that he filmed a same-sex kiss for Gladiator II that was ultimately cut from the final version of the movie. Washington plays Macrinus, a wealthy powerbroker in ancient Rome with a controversial background. “I actually kissed a man in the film,” Washington said, adding humorously, “It’s the kiss of death,” referencing his character’s lethal actions following the kiss. The Oscar-winning actor hinted that the scene’s removal might have been due to studio hesitation.
Washington’s portrayal of Macrinus in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II is already generating Oscar buzz, marking a celebrated reunion with the director after their 2007 collaboration on American Gangster. Reflecting on Scott’s influence, Washington shared with Empire, “I was tremendously inspired by Ridley… We should all want to feel like that at 86.”
Approaching a potential retirement, Washington is now prioritizing projects with esteemed directors. In an interview with Australia’s Today, he explained, “At this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make.” Washington’s commitment to unique and challenging roles, including Gladiator II, reflects his enduring passion for cinematic excellence.
Gladiator II is set to premiere in theaters on Nov. 22, offering audiences a powerful historical drama with Washington’s highly anticipated performance.
