Stocks struggle for direction in choppy trade
U.S. stocks have been volatile in early trading, as major indexes like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite struggled for direction.
Beneath the surface, breadth was decent, with the number of shares listed on the NYSE and Nasdaq trading higher outnumbering those trading lower, according to FactSet data.
Big Tech was responsible for some of the market’s weakness, as shares of Alphabet Corp. were off more than 4% in recent trade, while Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc. also traded lower. That helped to offset a 1.8% rise in shares of Nvidia Corp.
Here’s where stocks stood in recent trade:
The S&P 500 was off by 2 points, or less than 0.1%, at 5,913.
The Nasdaq Composite was down by 75 points, or 0.4%, at 18,881.
The Dow was up 57 points, or 0.1%, at 43,450.
