Dow Jones Today: Stock Futures Holding Steady Ahead of January Jobs Report
Futures tied to major indexes are little-changed Friday morning as investors await the release of employment data that will provide clues on the health of the economy and the outlook for interest rates.
Futures linked to the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were fluctuating between small gains and losses ahead of the scheduled 8:30 a.m. ET release of the January jobs report. The major indexes, which are trading near record highs, turned in a mixed performance on Thursday as investors reacted to a flurry of earnings reports.
The employment numbers from the Labor Department are expected to show that U.S. employers added fewer jobs in January than the month before, though hiring remained healthy overall. The monthly jobs report is one of the more important indicators followed by the Federal Reserve in its decision-making on interest rates.
The yield on 10-year Treasurys, which is sensitive to market expectations about the outlook for the economy and interest rates, was unchanged this morning at 4.44%.
Among stocks on the move in premarket trading, Amazon (AMZN) was off 3% after issuing a disappointing sales outlook that offset better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings. Other major tech stocks were mixed, as Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), Meta Platforms (META) and Broadcom (AVGO) inched higher while Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOGL), Amazon (AMZN) and Tesla (TSLA) fell slightly.
Shares of several companies were making massive moves this morning following the release of quarterly results. On the upside, Pinterest (PINS) and Doximity (DOCS) were up more than 20%, while Affirm Holdings (AFRM), Expedia (EXPE), Cloudfare (NET) and Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) all jumped more than 10%. Bill Holdings (BILL) and e.l.f. Beauty (ELF) both plunged more than 20%.
Bitcoin was holding steady at around $98,000 in recent trading, while gold futures rose 0.4% to around $2,890 an ounce and WTI crude oil futures gained0.6%.
