President Donald Trump went to Truth Social on Monday to encourage America’s farmers, a group that may be hard-hit by trade wars, to prepare to sell many commodities in the United States.
Trump’s statement came one day before 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods go into force and a 10% duty on Chinese imports is doubled.
“To the Great Farmers of the United States: Get ready to start making a lot of agricultural product to be sold INSIDE of the United States. Tariffs will go on external product on April 2nd. Have fun!” Trump wrote on
Truth Social amid escalating trade tensions.
It was unclear what he meant by “April 2.” However, that is the day on which he has stated that wide taxes on imports from other nations will go into force. Trump has referred to them as reciprocal trade tariffs required to match what other nations charge for American goods.
Trump did not specify which items would be affected or whether there would be any exceptions. However, data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveal that relevant tariffs would affect fruits, vegetables, and nuts, which normally account for at least half of agricultural exports entering the nation.
The president’s new declaration on agriculture tariffs comes as the United States prepares to levy 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico beginning Tuesday, March 4, dashing hopes for a last-minute agreement to prevent a trade war.
Chinese imports are also expected to face an additional 10% duty from midnight, following a 10% charge imposed earlier this year.
