Dow Jones closes with a 971-point loss amid Trump, Powell conflict
The stock market suffered another loss on Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing at a 971-point loss amid investor concerns over a row between President Donald Trump and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.
Trump called Powell “Mr. Too Late,” and a “major loser” in a social media post earlier in the day, after he criticized the president’s tariffs. The president also claimed that the economy would “slow” unless Powell lowered interest rates. The pair also bickered last week after Powell expressed concern that the economy could face a difficult period due to tariffs.
The Dow closed the day with a 2.48% drop, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite closed with 2.36% and 2.55% losses respectively, according to CNBC. The Dow opened with a 1,000-point drop in early trading.
