Local businesses feel the impact of trade war
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – Warehouses in Shreveport rely on local businesses for support. The price increase from overseas causes a trickledown effect that’s being passed down to business owners and their customers.
Most industries are feeling the effects of trade tensions between the United States and China. Over the weekend of May 9, a 90-day pause was announced by the Trump Administration lowering tariffs from 145% to 30%.
For years, Shreveport business owner Ronnetra Green has kept her prices consistent for her customers.
“So now that things have changed and the economy, the retail price, well first of all, the wholesale price has changed for me. Now I have to pay almost double the price of what I was paying before for all of my accessories,” Green explained. “Now the retail price is going to have to change for the consumers as well, so I no longer have $5 accessories, which people have known me for.”
Green says her standard accessories are now $8, and her $25 pieces are now $35. Even with the price increase she says its still about a 45% profit.
“And it’s all because of me having to pay more for wholesale, so of course, I have to make it make sense.”
The US and China’s trade war seems to be improving; however, many consumers are still worried about the future after the 90 days pause as tariffs are still higher than before.
