In preparation for the long weekend, the US bond market also operated on a shortened schedule, closing early at 2 PM ET on Friday, May 23, in accordance with guidelines from the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).
Memorial Day is celebrated every year on the last Monday in May and serves as a time of remembrance and gratitude for the sacrifices made by military personnel who gave their lives in service to the country. According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the holiday is recognized as the nation’s “foremost annual day to mourn and honor its deceased service men and women.”
After the Memorial Day closure, Wall Street will return to regular trading hours until the next scheduled holiday on Thursday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day.
