‘I’m getting on steroids’: UFC legend has hilarious plans for life after UFC 318 retirement fight
UFC legend Dustin Poirier is scheduled to have his cage fighting send-off this month at UFC 318. And the lightweight great has some pretty funny plans for what he wants to do with his body once he no longer has to stay in range of 155 pounds.
“So this will be the last time I’m ever 155 pounds in my life, I can promise you that,” Poirier told ESPN Friday. “I’m getting on steroids. Once USADA stops knocking on my door and I lay the gloves down, I’m getting jacked and tan. My wife’s like, ‘No, you’re not!’ I’m getting on it. That’s the honest truth.”
The former interim-champion’s clash with Max Holloway in New Orleans at the Smoothie King Center on July 19 will be the last of his career. The entire card is being built on this being his farewell bout. With retirement comes no longer having to be in the UFC drug testing pool. So once he is done, the lightweight legend can do whatever he wants.
Dustin Poirier record: 30-9-1 (NC) (16 knockouts, 7 submissions)
He also would not be the first retired UFC great to get juiced up after walking away from the Octagon. Fellow former lightweight great Donald Cerrone also started to use performance enhancers following his final bout three years ago.
For a good portion of Poirier’s early UFC career, he competed all the way down at 145 pounds. However, he made the jump up 10 pounds to 155 in 2015. It would be the beginning of a career renaissance that would see him win 14 of 20 in the division. Including an interim title victory and a pair of destructive wins over promotion legend Conor McGregor.
His upcoming clash with Holloway will be a trilogy bout. The Louisiana native won the first two and will be looking for a three-fight sweep over the former featherweight king and current BMF champion at UFC 318.
