Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) has announced its financial results for the first half of the year ending 30 June (1H 2025)
In a statement, TNB reaffirmed its focus in nation-building and community support, while delivering sustainable returns to shareholders.
First, reliability remains at the core of TNB’s strategy
In 1H 2025, the company invested RM5.2 billion in projects to meet demand growth, ensure supply security, and support the energy transition.
On 28 May, TNB recorded a new maximum demand of 21,049MW, proving the need for these upgrades. Power interruptions have also reduced — the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) improved to 23.56 minutes per customer compared to 23.92 minutes last year.
In terms of dividends, TNB estimates RM1.5 billion to be paid out to shareholders which, by extension, will flow back to the rakyat
For 1H 2025, TNB posted earnings of RM2.2 billion, supported by strong demand, operational efficiency, and a foreign exchange gain of RM350.6 million as the ringgit strengthened from RM4.47/USD in Dec 2024 to RM4.21/USD in June 2025.
This allowed TNB’s Board to declare an interim dividend of 25 sen per share, amounting to about RM1.5 billion. Nearly 60% of this payout will go to government-linked investment institutions such as KWSP, Khazanah, PNB, and KWAP, which in turn channel benefits back to millions of Malaysians through pensions and savings.
“Our dividend commitment is to continue to reward our shareholders. Subsequently, this directly goes back to the people and nation building. This reflects TNB’s ethos of delivering value while giving back to the nation we serve,” said TNB President and CEO Datuk Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan.
Beyond financial returns, TNB has channelled RM99.7 million into initiatives supporting education, welfare, healthcare, sports, sustainability, and disaster relief
- Education: RM64.3 million through UNITEN and Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN), benefitting 1,515 students
- Student Support: RM3 million to 276 needy students and 50 schools via Program Sekolah Angkat TNB
- Community Outreach: RM2.5 million reaching 93,000 people through food aid, community events, and religious programmes
- Healthcare: RM335,000 to hospitals and cancer support groups, helping 2,710 individuals
- Disaster Relief: RM541,250 to 3,156 flood and storm victims, including aid for Palestinian refugees
- Sports Development: RM4.8 million for hockey development, benefiting 15,750 athletes
- Green Initiatives: RM360,513 for solar rooftops in Pulau Redang schools and mosques (723 beneficiaries), plus RM2.17 million for rooftop solar and solar street lighting in hospitals, worship houses, rural schools, and island villages
TNB also provided RM5.4 million in zakat assistance to 21,500 asnaf beneficiaries through housing projects, home repairs, rewiring, mosque upgrades, and support for tahfiz institutions.
UNITEN will further strengthen Malaysia’s digital readiness by introducing new artificial intelligence (AI) Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes this September, equipping students with skills for future energy and tech careers.
TNB’s efforts across grid reliability, clean energy, and community impact reflect its Reimagining TNB 2.0 strategy
In July 2025, the company was recognised by Brand Finance as the world’s second strongest utility brand and ASEAN’s top utility brand, with brand value rising 35% to USD2.3 billion (RM9.7 billion) and a AAA strength rating.
This recognition reinforces TNB’s position as a trusted national energy leader while underscoring its long-term mission: building a reliable, sustainable, and inclusive energy ecosystem for Malaysia.
