Warren Buffett's McLane Co. opens AI tech hub in Austin as it accelerates digital transition
A major U.S. distribution company is accelerating its use of artificial intelligence and expanding its Central Texas footprint.
It will house 100 employees across cyber, data AI and cloud engineering expertise and will support the company’s growing Information Technology and Digital team. According to a news release, the Austin expansion will help the company tap into the city’s large tech talent pool.
McLane was founded in 1894 and partners with some of the largest retail and restaurant brands in the country, including Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut and Circle K. The company employs more than 25,000 people nationwide. Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett’s global holding company, acquired McLane from Walmart for $1.45 billion in 2003.
Like many companies around the nation, the distributor is leaning harder into technology investments. The company said the acceleration of its “digital transformation” includes implementation of more AI-powered products and solutions.
“It’s an exciting time to lead McLane’s technology journey,” Chief Information and Digital Officer Murat Genc said in a statement. “Our strategic investments in digital supply chain, cloud, data and AI foundation are laying the groundwork for a future-ready logistics, retail and food services model — one that delivers exceptional service, seamless integration and personalized insights across our ecosystem.”
