What to know about Columbus Day. Are banks, stock market, deliveries open today?
Monday, Oct. 13, is a holiday for lots of people. For many, it marks Columbus Day, a day to honor Italian-American heritage and pride, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. For others, it’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day, created after years of criticism over Christopher Columbus’ treatment of Native Americans.
But what does that mean for your stocks?
Is the stock market closed for Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
No. While Columbus Day has been a federal holiday since 1892, and one that President Donald Trump re-emphasized, stock markets will open as usual Monday.

The U.S. bond market, however, will be closed, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
The next scheduled stock market closure is on Thursday, Nov. 27, in observance of Thanksgiving.
Are banks open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
Branches of Capital One, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, PNC, Truist, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase will be closed on Oct. 13, the companies told USA TODAY. Capital One Cafes will remain open.
Is the post office open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
No. “Post Office locations will be closed in recognition of the federal holiday,” the U.S. Postal Service said.
Priority Mail Express items will be delivered, and normal service will resume on Tuesday, Oct. 14. Some online services are available and self-service kiosks wil still be open.
Is UPS open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
UPS pickup and delivery services will be available on Oct. 13, and UPS Store locations will remain open, according to the company’s website.

However, UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries will require one additional business days’ time in transit because the USPS will be closed.
Is FedEx open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples’ Day?
FedEx pickup and delivery services will be available on Oct. 13, and FedEx Office locations will also be open on the day, according to the company’s website.
Early on-call pickups and drop box pickups may be affected in some areas, FedEx said.
