Google To Invest $15 Billion In AI Hub In Visakhapatnam
NEW DELHI – Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai on October 14 announced the company’s largest-ever investment in India — a $15 billion Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh — marking a major step in India’s digital and AI journey.
The AI Hub, to be developed over five years, will include gigawatt-scale compute infrastructure, a new international subsea data gateway, and large-scale clean energy facilities. “This investment brings together the same high-performance infrastructure that powers Google’s global products,” said Pichai. “It will significantly expand India’s compute capacity, enabling AI innovation across sectors and supporting the next generation of startups, developers, and enterprises.”
The hub is being built in partnership with AdaniConneX and Airtel, combining data center expertise and renewable energy infrastructure. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian added that the facility would “bring Google’s AI capabilities closer to communities,” ensuring performance, scalability, and security for global workloads.
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani described the collaboration as a “monumental day for India,” noting that the Visakhapatnam campus will be the country’s largest AI data center, purpose-built for Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and Graphical Processing Unit (GPU)-based compute power. “Together with Google, we aim to drive AI solutions that transform healthcare, agriculture, and financial services,” Adani said.
Welcoming the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the gigawatt-scale compute infrastructure aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). He praised the initiative as one that will “democratize technology and ensure AI for All,” strengthening India’s digital economy and advancing its position as a global technology leader.
