From tariffs to the Iran conflict, many people are wondering what could actually crash the economy. So GOBankingRates asked ChatGPT. What it said is not just one issue but a mix of pressures building at the same time.
Also see three money moves that matter most when the economy feels unstable.
High Interest Rates
According to ChatGPT, high interest rates are one of the biggest risks right now. The current federal funds rate is 3.5% to 3.75%, which has remained unchanged since the Federal Reserve’s last meeting in March.
With what’s currently going on with the economy, the Fed may raise rates to slow things down. And if that were to happen, borrowing costs would be higher and consumers would lose purchasing power. ChatGPT said if rates stay high for too long, spending and investing could slow enough to trigger a broader downturn.

Government Debt
Another major concern is government debt. The U.S. national debt has crossed $39 trillion, and the cost of serving it continues to grow.

ChatGPT noted that this can be risky since the government will have less room to step in during a crisis.
Consumer Debt
Millions of Americans are relying on credit cards and loans to make ends meet. The rising credit card balances and increasing delinquency rates suggest many households are stretched.
If consumers suddenly cut back on spending, “it could hit businesses quickly and slow the economy overall,” ChatGPT said.
Global Conflicts and Supply Chain Risks
Geopolitical tensions can disrupt energy, trade and investor confidence. The current Iran war, for example, has skyrocketed gas prices due to oil supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz route.
Any major escalation could spike prices and impact the economy.
Stock Market and Labor Market Concerns
ChatGPT also said that both the stock market and labor market could add to the risk of the U.S. economy crashing. It said that some sectors of the stock market, especially tech, appear overvalued but could lead to sharp declines if expectations aren’t met.
At the same time, hiring has slowed down in certain industries. According to ChatGPT, if unemployment rises while markets fall, it could weaken confidence and accelerate a broader economic slowdown.
