$2,000 checks from Social Security in February 2025: find out if you get one and when
Month after month, the United States’ Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out millions of benefits checks nationwide.
Who gets Social Security checks in the US?
Beneficiaries of the SSA’s major Social Security programs include: recipients of retirement or survivors’ payments; people who are part of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) scheme; and individuals who are eligible for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) package.
Having now issued all checks relating to benefits for the above schemes in January 2025, the SSA is now preparing to begin February’s payments.
How much do Social Security recipients get?
Retired workers, who as of December 2024 accounted for around 70% of all Social Security beneficiaries, receive $1,976 per month on average.
Disabled workers on SSDI benefits are paid an average monthly amount of $1,580, and Americans on survivors’ benefits get an average of $1,832 each month.
Under the SSI scheme – which differs from the above programs as it is needs-based, rather than contribution-based – the maximum monthly check for an individual recipient currently stands at $967.
When will February 2025 Social Security payments be made?
SSI
Recipients of SSI payments will get their February money a day early. SSI checks normally go out on the first of the month, but payment is brought forward if that month begins on a weekend day or a holiday.
As February 1 is a Saturday, the SSA will issue checks for this program on Friday, January 31.
It’s worth noting that March also begins on a weekend day, so SSI checks for that month will likewise be issued early, on Friday, February 28.
Retirement, disability (SSDI) and survivors’ benefits
Most other Social Security beneficiaries will be paid on one of three Wednesdays in February, as part of a staggered system that decides a recipient’s payment date according to their birthday. The schedule is as follows:
Wednesday: February, 12: Recipients born between 1st and 10th of the month
Wednesday: February, 19: Recipients born between 11th and 20th of the month
Wednesday: February, 26: Recipients born between 21st and 31st of the month
Any there exceptions to this Social Security payment schedule?
Yes. Recipients of retirement, disability (SSDI) and survivors’ benefits who began getting their checks before May 1997 are always paid on the third day of the month, regardless of their date of brith.
In February 2025, therefore, these beneficiaries are scheduled to be paid on Monday 3rd.
