Stephen Hemsley, 72, former CEO and current chairman, will return to the helm. He previously led UnitedHealth until 2017 and is expected to stabilize operations as the company faces a turbulent outlook.
Witty’s exit follows UnitedHealth’s first earnings miss since the 2008 financial crisis, a stark contrast to its previous reliability on Wall Street. His tenure was also marred by a cyberattack affecting 190 million people, scrutiny over Medicare billing practices, and the shocking December murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealth’s insurance division, just before an investor conference.
Despite recent setbacks, UnitedHealth expects to return to growth by 2026. “Many of the issues standing in the way of achieving our goals are largely within our control,” Hemsley said during a call with investors.
Andrew Witty, former CEO of UnitedHealth Group, earned approximately $25 million in total compensation in 2023. His pay package included a $1.5 million base salary, $1.8 million in non-equity incentive compensation, $233,852 in other benefits, and $21.5 million from stock awards. Reuters reported that his compensation rose to $26.3 million in 2024, which included $150,951 for executive security services following the tragic death of Thompson.
According to Benzinga, Witty’s estimated net worth stands at $66.3 million, based on disclosed holdings in companies such as UnitedHealth Group and G1 Therapeutics, Inc.
