Cumberland County sheriff announces retirement
Cumberland County Sheriff Ennis Wright announced Friday his
plans to retire before county commissioners.
Wright’s retirement is effective June 30.
Wright wrote a resignation letter and in it, he recommended commissioners
appoint Maj. Jonathan Morgan to succeed him as sheriff.
In the letter, Wright wrote that Chief Deputy Casper “Jack”
Broadus III would assume the duty to act as sheriff until commissioners appoint
a successor.
In Wright’s resignation letter, he expressed gratitude for
having the chance to succeed his mentor, Sheriff Earl “Moose” Butler.
County commissioners appointed wright to serve as Cumberland County sheriff on Jan. 3, 2017, after Butler retired.
On Nov. 6, 2018, voters elected Wright, who became the first Black sheriff in Cumberland County. He won reelection in 2022.
The sheriff’s office’s website states Wright spent 29 years in law enforcement.
